Passage - SIFF 2023

The Syros International Film Festival (SIFF) returns to the capital of the Cyclades from July 28–31, exploring the theme of Passage, marking the transition of the festival into its second decade of existence, and signaling societal transitions into new eras and realms.

The four day Cycladic cinematic symposium initiates a dialogue between audience and the moving image, exploring states of transition between notions such as reality and fiction, life and death, personal memory and history, tradition and modernity, through moving image work produced both locally and internationally.

An established meeting point for cinephiles and festival lovers all across the island and far beyond SIFF returns with a rich programme of rare film screenings, audiovisual performances, and public events that will take place throughout the Summer and Fall, in addition to the main festival assembly.

From underrecognized masterpieces to contemporary independent cinema, SIFF blends art forms, images, sounds and cultures in historical locations of the island: From the open-air Pallas cinema to the emblematic Apollon Theater, and from the unique aesthetic of the Tarsanas shipyard to the popular Della Grazia Drive In Cinema.

About Syros International Film Festival (SIFF)

Founded in 2013, the Syros International Film Festival (SIFF) showcases a wide spectrum of cinema in traditional and re-purposed island sites. Located in the middle of the Aegean summer, removed from the usual demands and hierarchies of the film industry, SIFF embeds events, styles and programs – experimental and narrative, recent and retrospective, Greek and international, workshops and expanded cinema performance – into its unique setting. The festival aims to welcome an array of cinematic experiences into this immersive dreamscape, allowing us to re-think the question of “What is cinema?”

SIFF 2020-22: Off Season

What is “off season” when the prospect of re-starting widespread tourism seems risky and uncertain? What constitutes “off” and “high” season in a period that has disrupted our very perception of time, making us focus only on the urgent condition of the present moment (the imperative here and now)? What is the relationship between “off season” and “off -line”? SIFF calls on the restorative power of cinema to address this set of questions to its audience, inviting residents and visitors not only in a collective viewing experience, but also in a collective imaginary for the seasons to come.
