The Music Education Program was designed and implemented by the non-profit company samart after the successful visiting concerts of educational content by the Athenian Youth Symphony Orchestra (ASON), in May 2014, with the sponsorship of the Schwarz Foundation. The concerts were attended by about 1100 students of all levels (from primary to high school). Thechildren were initiated into the world of the orchestra (musical instruments, playing techniques, characteristic works from different periods, etc.) in a complete interactive program, and furthermore around 300 adults enjoyed an evening concert.

As an extension of the event – a first in Samos school time history – the Music Education Program was set up to promote the studies of musical orchestra instruments by children and adults in Samos island. The result was the one year program of Music Education in cooperation with the following organizations: Athenian Youth Symphony Orchestra (ASON), Conservatory "Orfeio" Athens (recognized by the State), Philharmonic "Vathyllos" Samos and music group "Mousiki Parea Samou".

Due to the increasing demand of participants in the program, samart orgsanised the continuation of this for the school year 2015-2016 by improving the functions and enriching the program with more courses, focusing on key musical instruments teaching of which there is complete shortage on the island.

The program took place in Samos Town (Malagari) and had the following characteristics:

  • Participation of 70 students under the teachings of 9 diploma teachers from Athens and Samos.
  • Artistic supervision by the Conservatory "Orfeio" Athens and artistic director Mr. Paulos Sergiou (conductor of ASON).
  • Teachings in (based on the expressed interest of the students): Violin (7), viola (1), clarinet (4), saxophone (4), trombone (1) piano (21), monody (17), drums (6), acoustic guitar (9) and music theory (Pre-theory for small children, Theory and Harmony).
  • Studies according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Culture, that defines the material and exam procedures giving the ability to certify studies in collaboration with the Conservatory "Orfeio" Athens.
  • Concert by students of the program at the end of the year (June 2015).
  • Donation of three musical instruments (a viola, a cello and a double bass) by the Orchestra ASON in return for the hospitality and excellent organization during their visit in Samos, aiming to give students the ability to study these instruments.
