Architectural Scholarship for the Academic Year 2026–2027

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED
The Schwarz Foundation awards the Architecture Scholarship for the 2026–2027 academic year to the candidate Ms. Natalia Lydia Papadantonaki. Ms. Papadantonaki, a graduate of the School of Architecture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Cambridge (UK) on the topic: "The Architect and the Machine. A Transparent Preference-Learning Framework for the Sustainable Design of Public Architectural Structures."
General Information
Architectural Scholarship 2026–2027 (Call closed)
The programme supports doctoral and postdoctoral research that contributes to contemporary architectural discourse and practice, with particular emphasis on Architectural Design, Urban Design, Environmental Design, History of Architecture, Urban History, Architectural Theory, and the Restoration of Historic and Modern Monuments and Ensembles.
The scholarship is open to applicants holding Greek citizenship and/or nationality who were born in or after 1991.
Eligible applicants include:
- PhD candidates currently enrolled at a university in Greece or abroad
- Applicants who have received official acceptance to begin their doctoral research by 30 June 2026
- Postdoctoral researchers currently conducting research at a university in Greece or abroad
- Applicants who have received official acceptance to begin their postdoctoral research by 30 June 2026
- Applicants who are already receiving funding from another public or private scholarship programme are not eligible.
Scholarship Details
Duration: 12 months
Scholarship amount: €10,800
Start date: 1 September 2026 or 1 October 2026
The scholarship is paid quarterly in advance to the recipient’s personal bank account.
Application Requirements
Applicants are required to submit the following documents in English or Greek, in PDF format:
- One recent photograph
- Copy of passport or identity card
- Curriculum Vitae (maximum two pages)
- Proof of proficiency in at least one foreign language, specifically the language relevant to the country of research, unless exempt through previous academic study
- Certificate of enrolment or official letter of acceptance from the host university or institution
- Research proposal (maximum 2,000 words)
- Two sample publications, articles, or other relevant written work, if available
- Two letters of recommendation, including one from the academic supervisor
- Certificate of military status for male applicants
Research Proposal Guidelines
For Doctoral Candidates
The proposal should clearly outline the subject and objectives of the research, the originality and relevance of the project, the proposed methodology, the relationship between the annual research and the doctoral dissertation, as well as a projected timeline for the completion of the dissertation.
For Postdoctoral Candidates
The proposal should clearly outline the subject and objectives of the research, the originality and relevance of the project, the proposed methodology, the relationship between the proposed project and the applicant’s previous research activity, as well as a projected timeline for completion.
Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed by the Foundation and external experts where appropriate. The Foundation reserves the right to invite shortlisted candidates to a personal interview.
Reporting Requirements
Scholarship recipients are expected to submit:
A short written progress report every three months
A final scientific report of approximately 3,000 words at the end of the funding period, outlining the methodology, findings, and broader relevance of the research
