Dimitris Tigkas was born in Patras, Greece,in 1982. He studied modern doublebass,with Evgeny Bratushka at the Municipal Music School of Volos,andthen with Vassilis Papavassiliou at the Hellenic Conservatory of Music and Arts in Athens, where he graduated. In September 2006, he moved to Amsterdam, where he studied the violone (an early form of double bass) with Maggie Urquhart. He earned a Bachelor's and a Master's in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Moreover, he earned a Bachelor's in musicology from the University of Athens. He has performed as a freelance musician in many orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and electroacoustic ensembles. He is a member of the early music ensembles: Latinitas Nostra, Ex Silentio, and Armonia Atenea, as well as the Medea Electronique collective.
