Percussionist Raphaël Derderyan grew up in a world music environment, his father being an accordionist in a traditional Greek-Armenian group. As a teenager, Derderyan studied oriental percussion with Vahan Kerovpyan (darbuka, dhol, bendir, tombac). He improved his technique while learning drums (rock and jazz), African percussion and theory at the Conservatory of Alfortville. A huge fan of oriental jam sessions in Paris, at the age of 18 he co-founded the eight-member band Collectif Medz Bazar, a traditional as well as contemporary oriental music bazaar. The group performs its own compositions as well as arrangements of Turkish, Armenian, Kurdish and French songs around the world. Their first album, Kokoreç, was released in 2014 and the second, Poshmanella, in January 2017. Derderyan is also a member of Paris-based AKN choir of modal Armenian music, which released its latest album in 2013.
