Jean Kim, from Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2013 and studies with cello Carter Brey and Peter Wiley. All students at Curtis receive merit-based, full-tuition scholarships, and Ms. Kim is the Edwin B. Garrigues Annual Fellow.
Ms. Kim has performed as a soloist with the Great Mountains Music Festival Chamber Orchestra, Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra, and the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra. She has been a winner in numerous competitions, including the 2012 Johansen International Competition for string players (third prize), the 2007 and 2012 Juilliard Pre-College Concerto Competition (first prize), the 2006 and 2012 Long Island Conservatory International Music Competition (first prize, categories A and B), the 2012 Klein International Competition (fourth prize), the 2007 and 2010 New York Music Competition for Young Artists (first prize), the 2010 Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition (first prize), and the 2010 Queens Symphony Young Soloist Competition (second prize).
Ms. Kim has participated in the Chigiana Accademia in Italy, Weimarer Meisterkurse, Aspen Music Festival and School, Centre d'Arts Orford, the Banff Centre, and Festival MusicAlp in France. She attended the Juilliard Pre-College Division.
Ms. Kim began cello lessons at age five and previously studied with Vladimir Morgofsky and Minhye Clara Kim.
