Percussionist Raphaël Derderyan grew up in a world music environment with a father who was an accordionist in a traditional Greek-Armenian group. As a teenager, Derderyan studied oriental percussion with Vahan Kerovpyan (Darbuka, Dhol, Bendir, Tombac), He improved his technique while learning drums (rock and jazz), African percussion and theory at the conservatory in Alfortville. A huge fan of oriental jam sessions in Paris, at the age of 18 he co-founded the band Collectif Medz Bazar: eight members in a traditional and modern musical bazaar of the East. The group performs its own arrangements and compositions in Turkish, Armenian, Kurdish and French around the world. Their first album was released in 2014 with the second due to be released in January 2017. Derderyan is also a member of the AKN choir of modal Armenian music in Paris, which released its latest album in 2013.
